What is VCI packaging?

VCI packaging ("Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor" packaging) is plastic packaging with corrosion-inhibiting agents added during manufacturing. Inside the sealed packaging, these agents form a protective atmosphere that settles as an invisible, dry film on every accessible metal surface — including cavities and bores — inhibiting rust and other corrosion processes throughout storage and transport. At the same time, the packaging shields its contents from mechanical impact and contamination.

: Corrosion (from the Latin corrodere: to decompose or erode) is defined in the DIN EN ISO 8044 standard (formerly DIN 50900) as the “reaction of a metallic material with its environment, which causes a measurable change to the material and a deterioration in the functional capability of a mechanical component or an entire system”. Normally, this reaction is electrochemical. In some cases, however, it may also be of a chemical or metal-physical nature.
: Corrosive processes are extremely complex phenomena. Probably the best-known form of chemical corrosion in metals is rusting, in which iron is oxidized by oxygen under the influence of water (typically moist air or splashing water). The striking, green patina formation that can sometimes be seen on copper is also the result of corrosion.
: Corrosion can be caused by a number of different factors. These include high humidity, splashing water, condensation, temperature fluctuations, industrial emissions such as SO2 and NOX, acids, dust, and dirt. In addition, even human sweat can cause corrosion.
: DIN EN ISO 8044 defines a total of 36 different types of corrosion. Surface corrosion is the term used when the corrosion process occurs over the entire surface, or at least a large part thereof. By contrast, pitting (also called pitting corrosion or pinholing) refers to corrosion that is limited to a specific area. Contact corrosion (also called bimetallic corrosion) is an electrochemical reaction of two different metallic materials that are in direct contact with each other. For example, this may occur in connections in which screws, nuts or rivets consisting of baser metals are in contact with elements made from stainless steel, copper, or brass.
: The abbreviation VCI stands for “Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor”. These are special chemical substances that are introduced into the packaging, where they gradually evaporate to form a protective layer on the metal surfaces of the packaged goods and protect them from corrosion.
: The anti-corrosive agent (also called an inhibitor) is added to the plastic granulate during production of the packaging. Inside the sealed plastic packaging, the inhibitor evaporates out of the carrier material in gaseous form and spreads out, covering the metal surfaces of the packaged goods. This invisible protective layer of VCI molecules inhibits any corrosive reactions. The inhibitor also penetrates into any grooves, holes, and cavities, increasing the scope of protection.
: Our VCI protective packaging can protect the contents against corrosion for up to five years or longer. The packaging can also be opened briefly during this time, for example to remove individual components or during stocktaking.
: When the contents are unpacked, the inhibitor volatilizes without residue within one to two hours. Elaborate cleaning is therefore not necessary – the goods are rust-free and ready for immediate use.
